Domain 2: Classroom Environment

What is Domain 2 About?

Domain Two is all about creating a good classroom environment. This covers everything from physical space, like desk arrangement, to behavior expectations. Domain Two begins by discussing how teachers should outline their expectations. Creating a classroom environment where students respect each other as well as the teacher will allow for better learning. This domain also covers classroom procedures and transitions. It is very important for a teacher to have smooth transitions between different parts of the instructional time. Having time for students to lose focus on what needs to be done (especially in middle school) will often cause them to be distracted by conversation or other topics. It is also important for teachers to help students take charge of their own learning. This process comes with students being wrong and learning how to move on from there. For students to feel comfortable being wrong, teachers must create a classroom environment where they can be wrong, and not be ashamed or embarrassed for it.

Domain 2 talks about how to create a good classroom environment with respect and rapport. In order to achieve this, one must be able to manage behaviors in the classroom. Having a behavior records chart helps us to track behaviors with students in order to see either a pattern of behavior that needs to be dealt with or a student who rarely misbehaves and has something else going on.  Click on the image to get a better view!
